I was driving westbound on Highway 193 in Clearfield Utah, when I came to the intersection of 1000 East and Highway 193. I noticed that a firetruck was travelling east towards the intersection with its emergency lights on, all traffic around me, including myself, slowed to a stop to allow the firetruck an unimpeded path to travel. However, I noticed the Jeep behind me wasn’t slowing down. There wasn’t anything I could do to avoid the collision, so I just braced for impact. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone who is suffering after an accident like mine. I was driving eastbound on Highway 193, a four-lane highway in Layton, Utah. I came to a stop at the two-way intersection of Highway 193 and North Hills Drive. The other driver failed to yield to my right-of-way and proceeded southbound through the intersection, I wasn’t able to stop fast enough, and I T-boned the other vehicle at a high speed. The impact of the crash was so severe that it triggered my vehicle’s airbags. The severity of the crash caused many serious and extensive injuries to my neck, back, shoulders, and head. Thankfully, I was restrained by my seatbelt, which prevented any worse injuries. In January of 2014, my husband was involved in a terrible accident. He was driving on highway 89 in Wellsville, UT, when another driver ran a stop sign and pulled out in front of him. He tried to swerve out of the way, but he wasn’t able to avoid hitting the other vehicle. Remaining Safe Around Distracted Drivers
Unfortunately, when you decide to get in the car and drive, you are accepting responsibility as well as the risks associated with that responsibility. While you can only control your actions while driving and not those of others, there are still some measures you can take to keep you and your passengers safe while driving around distracted drivers. You can:
- Make eye contact with the other driver. This just lets them know that they are not alone and others can see them distracted. This is also a good idea before pulling out in front of someone because then you can be sure they saw you.
- Slow down to let the distracted driver pass you or stay out of their way. This is the best way to avoid an accident with them. This may include avoiding driving around them in case they swerve or cross over lines.
- Look both ways before going through an interaction. It is a common misconception that drivers don’t need to check both ways when their light turns green at an intersection. This can avoid an accident if someone is not paying attention and is going to run a red light.
- Pull over if necessary. If you do not feel safe on the road near the distracted driver, it’s okay to pull over and then continue past you for some ways before continuing.
